Day 3 – The Twilight Saga: New Moon

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is the second installment of the Twilight Saga and stars Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, Robert Pattinson as the vampire, Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as Native American werewolf, Jacob Black.  The story picks up at the beginning of Bella’s senior year of high school.  She and Edward are still together but after an incident at Bella’s birthday party in which Edward’s brother, Jasper, nearly attacks Bella, The Cullens move away from town.  Bella becomes incredibly depressed until she begins to rekindle her friendship with Jacob.  As their relationship blossoms, Jacob becomes suddenly aware that he is a werewolf.  While he struggles with his identity, Bella is confronted by an old nemesis who threatens to kill her and we are left wondering whether Edward will come back to save her.

To be blunt, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is a terrible film and a terrible story.  The characters make absolutely no sense, the plot is completely ridiculous, and the acting is a joke.  I can’t tell you what happened more times throughout the film: Jacob taking his shirt off, Bella biting her bottom lip, or Edward slowly turning his head, wide-eyed and pale, while making a face of horror and disgust.  I have no idea how Anna Kendrick can be so good in Up in the Air simultaneously being in something so horrible.  I will say, Michael Sheen was very good as Aro, leader of The Volturi.

The character of Bella Swan is the most insane and selfish character ever conceived.  In fact, I’m willing to applaud Stephanie Meyer for creating possibly the most horrific character in literary history.  She flips out when Edward leaves town and subsequently makes her father and friends’ lives hell by being a total pain in the ass.  Then, for no conceivable reason, she decides to hop on the back of some random thug’s motorcycle in an attempt to summon Edward.  Once she realizes what a totally ridiculous idea this is, she asks the biker to stop and let her off, which he does… think about that for a second… it makes no sense.  Realizing that motorcycling is a huge rush for her, she buys two motorcycles and asks Jacob to fix them up.  They spend a ton of time together but when Jacob admits that he likes her as more than a friend, she is almost offended and pushes him away.  Then, when he turns into a werewolf and tells Bella to stay away, she gets mad that he is pushing her away.  She is totally and completely selfish.

Edward is basically the vampire equivalent of Ike Turner.  He mentally and emotionally abuses Bella and puts her in situations of potential physical harm and then says that he is leaving her because he can’t stand to see her in harms way.  Aside from doing this and making unnatural faces of disgust, he’s only in the movie so that he can take his shirt of in the middle of a plaza in Italy.

Possibly the most ludicrous scene is when the Cullen family takes a vote as to whether or not they will turn Bella into a vampire despite Edward’s vehement protests not to.  They take a vote.  It’s completely insane that they would bring it to a vote.  If Edward doesn’t wanna do it, than he shouldn’t do it.  If one of the others does, than they should.  The only major apparent issue with being a vampire is that it ruins your soul.  What difference does that make?  Vampires live forever so their immortal souls would basically be useless anyway.  One of the characters remarks that it’s a hollow existence.  The Cullens seem to be living a pretty decent life, so I don’t see how it’s a “hollow existence.”

Basically, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is a complete waste of time.  I don’t understand how anyone can actually take this seriously.  The Twilight Saga: New Moon gets a 2.5/10.

  1. You got New Moon right. It is the worst movie I have seen in a long time. It is so obviously targeted at teenage girls and their mothers who wish they were still teenage girls that it make me sick with the cheesiness. The story was ridiculous like the subplot in the middle where the red headed vampire came to get Bella and had to be defended by her new wolve friends. This whole scene had no relevance to the rest of the movie at all, they could have cut it out and given us all back 20 minutes of our lives.

But the worst thing about this movie was that nothing actually happened. They just went through the actions with no storyline at all.

  2. Anna Kendrick was awesome in Up In The Air. nailed that role. New Moon is abysmal.
